TFW, Samantha Carlton Speaks at NAWIC Camp

by Michelle Brown

A new Austin camp encourages girls to consider pursuing careers in construction. Our very own Samantha Carlton and Charlie Cerf attended and were part of the presentation.

Samantha is a member of The National Association Of Women in Construction organization here in Austin. One of the goals that NAWIC has is to recruit more girls into the industry, and convince the next generation of girls that working in the construction sector is a good way to build a career.

The NAWIC camp is using space at Crockett High School’s construction technology building for the camp. This group of thirteen middle school age girls will be spending their week learning valuable skills as a precursor to possible careers in the construction industry. The group will build, wire their own lamps, pour concrete, and build a free library stand.

Charlie spoke to the group about project coordination and estimating. He had the girls estimate the cost of re-roofing a building and explained how even now they use the skill of estimating in their everyday lives. After Charlie explained how estimating is used on a daily basis, applying the concept in roofing made it seem less intimidating.

Thank you Samantha and Charlie for representing Fifth Wall so well. We appreciate you both taking the time to encourage and empower these young ladies to pursue a career in what historically has been considered a predominantly male industry.
